Blocking of SMS Spam and Fraud

SMS Spam and Fraud jeopardizes mobile messaging, a very lucrative market for operators of wireless networks. A lot of operators are facing an increasing number of SMS problems such as Spamming, Fraud and illegal use of their SMS-C addresses. These cause:

• Revenue leakage due to faked SMS traffic and SMS spoofing.
• Unpredictable loads on the network due to SMS flooding.

SMS messages are signaling #7 messages, which can be monitored with Signaling Surveillance Systems. For SMS Spam and Fraud detection two points in the wireless network have to be monitored:

• International MAP gateway (IGP).
• The MAP interface to the SMS Center (SMS-C).

This is often done at the Signaling Transfer Point (STP). Performance requirements for the Signaling Surveillance System are very high, because of the large number of SMS messages in critical situations.

NexusNETVIEW provides powerful signaling surveillance for GSM, GPRS, UMTS and VoIP. Its fraud detection module, designed for a very high number of calls, forms the solid base for the SMS Spam and Fraud application. Due to its rule-based approach, combined with self-learning capabilities, new SMS Fraud patterns can be implemented easily to aid detection as soon as possible.

NexusNETVIEW detects various SMS Spam and Fraud patterns, generating on-line alarms to take relevant actions automatically:

1. SMS Flooding: A high number of text messages from a single source flooding the network might cause overload situations within the network. NexusNETVIEW screens for high numbers of SMS from a foreign SMSC and/or repetitive content.
2. Faked SMS: SMS originating from an international SS7 network and terminating in the wireless network, but with manipulated SSCP or MAP address. NexusNETVIEW detects "unusual" originating SCCP addresses, in conjunction with high numbers of abnormal SMS messages.
3. SMS Spoofing: Illegal use of SMS-C by a third party using a manipulated MS-ISDN. NexusNETVIEW checks MS-ISDN in combination with high traffic volume.
