GPRS and UMTS Performance Monitoring
GPRS and UMTS are new wireless technologies that are rapidly gaining in market position.
As with any other network service, guaranteed service levels are a compulsory part of business. However, due to the rapidly advancing technologies, comprehensive reporting facilities are not as common as might be wished.
Mobilkom Austria, an innovative leader in mobile telephony, was searching for an integrated performance reporting solution to report on the GPRS and UMTS services within their core network. This covers the GGSN / SGSN core, the GSM voice backbone, in addition to their ATM and Frame Relay backbone.
As one of the first carriers offering UMTS services, Mobilkom Austria had high expectations of a reporting system. Due to the technological challenges involved in their requirements, the choice of possible solutions was small. The reporting system was not only to be a source of data for network operations, but should also produce trend statistics and calculate KPIs for the network planning department and executive management. They also required flexibility within the product to enable on-going enhancements to support their commitment to be at the forefront of technology.
The Nexus Reporting Suite (NRS) from Nexus Telecom AG was deemed to be the ideal solution for Mobilkom Austria’s needs.
NRS is a flexible, modular multi-domain, multi-vendor OSS performance reporting solution offering support for Wireless GPRS/UMTS/GSM, next generation IP services, and FR/ATM networks. It assists enterprise and service provider managers to analyze problem areas at various levels of detail, while monitoring and evaluating network usage trends and traffic volumes. Many of the service-based reports are used for Service Level Verification of customer Service Level Agreements. It provides support for multi-domain networks within Carriers, Service Providers and large Enterprises, thus enabling detailed and flexible network analysis to meet ever-changing business needs cost effectively. The solution cater for GPRS, UMTS and GSM technology.
In addition to the product’s technical capabilities, the main factor in winning the contract was the specialist knowledge demonstrated by Nexus Telecom, together with the company’s rapid response to requirements and requests.
The Nexus Telecom software package will be used to plan further expansion of the UMTS core network, thus ensuring complete and consistent fulfillment of demands for high quality by customers of Mobilkom Austria.
